Remodeling Pays Back in Comfort and Value
That avocado green stove, those harvest gold tiles, or the bathroom that requires a waiting line to use: whatever the impetus, maybe it's time to remodel.
Changes can breathe new life into an old structure. During May, the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association (SAHBA) is celebrating the structural, lifestyle and design benefits homeowners can gain from remodeling.
Top five reasons to remodel:
-
Now is the time to take advantage of low interest rates.
-
Remodeling contributes to the repair and upkeep of a home.
-
Structural improvements can increase energy-efficiency.
-
Remodeling can raise the home's value.
-
Kitchen remodels enhance functionality.
Thousands of local homeowners flip the style of their humble abodes each year. Even current economic conditions can't stop them from showing their house some love.
“The downward market hasn't stopped homeowners from making it a priority to remodel,” said Kevin O'Brien of Arizona Designs and Vice Chairman of the SAHBA Remodelers.
Remodeling enables homeowners to recreate floor plans and add contemporary design elements to raise resale value. But most importantly, remodeling aims to increase the comfort level of the homeowner, said O'Brien, a SAHBA member.
“Adding storage space, walk-in showers and ultimately making the home beautiful are huge benefits owners will enjoy,” said O'Brien.
Out with the old and in with the new does not have to be a long complicated process.
SAHBA Remodelers suggest these tips to help organize the process:
-
Compile a list of needs and wants and then prioritize the projects. Knowing what has top billing can curb multiple projects from being pushed to the backburners.
-
Create a file with magazine clips and design ideas. Envisioning the final look can help the homeowner make thoughtful decisions.
-
Consider traffic patterns, furniture size, colors and lighting in relation to how the remodeled space will be used.
-
Aging homeowners should consider a home's accessibility. A walk-in shower is a trendy and beneficial remodel for senior citizens.
-
Calculate how much money will be needed for labor, furnishings, landscaping, or any other related costs.
-
Hire a professional to help avoid fraud and bring important experience to the job.
Licensed, bonded and insured remodelers are held to higher standards by organizations such as the SAHBA Remodelers.
