Home Buyers Celebrate New Homes Month

Despite current economic conditions, homeownership is still the best investment a person can make toward a financially secure future. In Southern Arizona , it is a buyer's market.

New homes are becoming more environmentally friendly and better suited for a modern lifestyle. In celebration of New Homes Month in April, SAHBA wants residents to learn about the benefits of owning a new home.

Fixed rates are near a 30-year low, making mortgages extremely favorable for buyers. These rates, partnered with numerous homes on the market and low prices, have produced “favorable conditions for buyers,” said Roger Yohem , SAHBA Vice President.

“In just the past few weeks, we have seen an uptick in traffic at various model home sites,” said Yohem. “I believe people are looking to buy before the market turns around and heads back up.”

Another economic reason to buy is higher level of efficiency in new homes. SAHBA members have taken notice of the “green” movement and have adapted numerous technologies for their customers.

“A wide variety of products and building techniques have been incorporated to make homes more resource efficient. Benefits from current innovations give new homes a definite green and energy advantage over existing homes,” said Yohem.

Updated insulation, modern design and Energy Star certified appliances contribute to higher energy savings. Many local builders participate in programs that promote energy-efficient appliances, such as Energy Star certification by Southwest Gas and the Tucson Electric Power Comfort Guarantee Program.

Most new home construction is tailored to make an efficient space that will save the owner money. For example, the U.S. government certifies that the heating and cooling costs of homes in Pepper Viner Homes' Civano North Ridge community are reduced by at least 50%.

The National Association of Home Builders reported that homes are being built “greener” and with closer attention to design elements. New homes are being built with the future of the family and the earth in mind.

“SAHBA knows that homeownership is more than a stepping stone to financial security. Quality new homes will support the environment and the people inside,” said Yohem.

SAHBA represents about 750 member businesses and 40,000 jobs serving the residential construction industry in Pima and Cochise counties.
