Take Measures to Avoid Mosquitoes on your Property

The first mosquito bite of the season is usually met with a groan. That nasty nip reminds homeowners of the morning they woke to find their leg had been used as a late-night buffet. But homeowners can do more than dread mosquito bites as the monsoons approach.

Although mosquitoes are hard to avoid, homeowners can take measures to prepare their property for the season. SAHBA member Northwest Exterminating provides customers with a larvacide that prevents eggs from hatching.

“Better pest control is one of the advances that allowed modern civilizations to become healthier and safer,” said Dena Berg, Northwest's Technical Director. “Larvacides can help stop mosquitoes that can be potential dangers to public health.”

Eliminate Breeding Grounds

Preparing property for the monsoons also is important to mosquito prevention. Homeowners shouldn't allow water to stand for more than four days. After rain, double check the property for pooling water or any water-retaining receptacle that was not detected. Drill holes to prevent water collection in outdoor containers that are not used or turn them upside down.

Homeowners with animals have another reason to change Fido's water bowl. Bowls located outside should be changed regularly to prevent pests from setting up shop near food and water. For the same reason, bird enthusiasts may want to consider putting bird bathes out of commission during mosquito season.

Well-kept pools normally are not a problem. However, make sure pool pumps are circulating and water doesn't collect on the pool's cover. Turn over wading pools when not in use and put toys away, such as cups or anything that can hold water.

Standing water is a huge factor in the presence of mosquitoes, but overall yard maintenance also is important. Overgrown areas or dense shrubbery can be another breeding ground and a place to rest for mosquitoes. Clean out gutters to allow free flow of water away from the home.

Make it a Community Effort

Even if homeowners diligently prepare their property, neighboring sites can lead to a mosquito problem that will impact them. Inform neighbors about mosquitoes or enlist a neighborhood association to spread awareness. Abandon or neglected properties where mosquitoes are breeding may be a health risk and can be reported to government officials.
