SAHBA Members Give Back to the Community

Community Service has become second nature to members of the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association (SAHBA).

“Members bring their core values of family, hard work, and philanthropy to the table,” said SAHBA Vice President Roger Yohem. “They come out to our events and projects on their own spare time.”

During 2007, hundreds of SAHBA members upheld the Association's reputation as the “Community Builder” by volunteering their time in the community.

Among the major programs were:

Arizona Arthritis Center: The Annual SAHBA/Lute Olson Celebrity Auction, Luncheon & Golf Tournament raised an estimated $90,000 to continue research at the UA Arthritis Center. After 20 years, the event has raised over $1.5 million.

Botanical Gardens: SAHBA members donated over $226,000 in cash and materials to build the SAHBA Pavilion at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. The Pavilion accommodates children and adult programs, workshops, lectures and community events.

Critical Path Institute (C-Path): Several local, non-profit organizations benefited from the proceeds raised at the 13th Annual Carnival de Golfe. SAHBA donated $10,000 to support C-Path's efforts to set up a high-tech research facility.

The Hearth Foundation, Parent Aid, Tee up for Tots, and Youth on Their Own: Remaining proceeds from the Carnival de Golfe event supported these organizations, each receiving $6,800.

Flowing Wells School District: The SAHBA Membership Committee presented 422 backpacks to the Flowing Wells School District Resource center to help support the students.

New Beginnings: The SAHBA Sales & Marketing Council built its first Halloween Town to benefit New Beginnings. It included a Haunted House, Trick-or-Treating, and games for the women and children to enjoy.

The Ronald McDonald House: SAHBA donated $1,000 to the children of the Ronald McDonald House.

Tucson Wildlife Center (TWC): SAHBA donated $300 to help TWC's efforts in rescuing ill, orphaned, injured or displaced animals.

Cochise College; Buena High School; Special Olympics, Children's Crisis Center, and; Southeastern Arizona Contractor's Association (SACA): The 3rd Annual SACA Charity Golf Classic raised approximately $12,000 to benefit the Cochise College Trade School scholarships, Buena High School's Project Graduation, the Special Olympics, the Children's Crisis Center, and the SACA Building Fund.

“Our members selfless giving weaves SAHBA into the fabric of our community,” said Yohem. “They are your family, friends or neighbors who live all over town.”

SAHBA represents about 750 member businesses and 40,000 jobs serving the residential construction industry in Pima and Cochise counties.
