Trade School Recruiting Students and Employer Participants
The SAHBA Institute of Construction (TSIC) is accepting applications for career-oriented students. Participants have left the trade school with a wide-range of skills for the past three years.
The one-year-long, tuition-free school is limited to 50 students, 18 years and older, who want a career in the building industry. TSIC, privately funded by Southern Arizona Home Builder Association (SAHBA) members, teaches skills in residential construction. Upon graduation, students have the skills necessary to work in the field.
“The great thing about this program is that once graduated, students are ready for direct employment,” said Program Administrator Les Wolf.
The TSIC Experience
TSIC consists of two components over a 50-week period: on-site fieldwork and in-classroom instruction.
The classroom curriculum includes Principles of the Industry, Properties and Nomenclature of Materials, Print Reading, Estimating, and Project Management. Classes meet twice a week at SAHBA during the evening.
“Students with training and knowledge are in high demand in the construction industry,” said Wolf, a SAHBA member. “This program prepares students with skills to be productive and earn a decent wage after completing all the course work.”
During the field component, students work with eight different trade contractors for six weeks each at minimum wage ($6.90/hour). Field experience can include plumbing, electrical, HVAC, concrete, masonry, framing, finish carpentry, drywall, stucco, insulation, and painting.
Student and Employer Participant Benefits
One of the greatest bebefits of TSIC is the real life interatction between tomorrow's workers and employers.
Employer participants receive temporary workers who are eager to learn, dependable, and anxious to actively participate for six weeks,” said Wolf, Owner of the L.G. Wolf Company. “This is an excellent way for future employers to evaluate a potential long-term employee, hirable upon graduation.”
TSIC, established by SAHBA in 2005, is the brainchild of Wolf, a 27-year Tucson builder and former instructor at Pima Community College.
“This program benefits not only the industry, but the community and students equally,” he said. “Opportunities afforded by this program offer only the most positive, long-term benefits.”
TSIC applications for students and interested employers are available at SAHBA ( 2840 N. Country Club Rd. ), by calling (520) 795-5114 or www.sahba.org under Careers.
Enrollment Deadline: Monday, September 15.
SAHBA represents about 750 member businesses and 40,000 jobs serving the residential construction industry in Pima and Cochise counties.
