Safety … What’s the big deal?

Health and safety in the workplace is about making all reasonable efforts to ensure all employees go home from work each day as healthy and physically fit as when they arrived in the morning.

Workplace safety is an important consideration to all businesses. Attention to safety issues helps businesses avoid legal penalties, and improves employee morale, productivity, and retention. In addition to these benefits, businesses armed with solid workplace safety policies and records realize enormous financial benefits in lower insurance premiums.

An employer’s workers’ compensation premium is based on several factors including risk classification code, payroll, and accident history. No factor has more control over insurance premiums or is less understood less by policyholders than the experience modification or ‘e-mod. The e-mod indicates how a company’s accident rate compares to other businesses within its industry. Three consecutive years of actual workers’ compensation claims provide the statistical basis for an employer’s e-mod. Companies with a high accident frequency pay higher premiums while companies with a low claim frequency pay lower premiums.

SAHBA and SCF Arizona work together to help all SAHBA members lower their accident frequency and severity, and reap the benefits of a safer work environment. SAHBA holds monthly Safety Meetings where you can learn how to better protect your employees and positively affect your company’s bottom line.

Join us on February 26 at 8 am in the SAHBA office for our first Safety Meeting of the year and start making a positive impact on your business.

RSVP by February 24 to Mayra Gallardo at mayra@sahba.org or 520-795-5114.
