Chairman's Message

That which does not
kill us...

Michael Whyde, Pepper Viner Homes

If ever there were an example of “That which does not kill us only makes us stronger,” we could point to the challenges SAHBA has faced over the past year. Looking back on 2009, I can say with every confidence that we are poised to face the New Year a more focused, agile, and effective builder advocacy association.

As often is the case, adversity prompts change. At SAHBA I am proud to say that our response to the challenges we faced in 2009 has brought about some very meaningful changes to the organization.

In response to the ongoing challenges of a tough economic climate, we took a long, hard look at how we could become a more effective and efficient operation. Not only did we make changes through significant staff reorganization, but we also revamped policies and procedures and approved amended Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws (see the Bylaws Report for more information). These documents outline the path that will guide SAHBA into a new era and allow the association to adapt to future challenges and provide the value that our members deserve.

To address the challenge of declining membership numbers, we held our first ever membership drive which netted 34 new SAHBA members. Through a tough political climate/election process we were able to establish and strengthen bonds with community organizations such as the Tucson Association of Realtors, Tucson Police Department and Tucson Firefighters as well as business leaders like Jim Click.

It is a testament to the SAHBA staff’s ongoing dedication and commitment to our members that they have not only endured the challenges of 2009 but have risen to meet each one head on.

As we look to 2010, I am confident our new Executive Board of Trustees will continue to build on groundwork that has been laid over the past year. And although we will face future challenges, I know we can pull from the strength we developed over the past several months to meet whatever issues may arise.

I cannot end this message without acknowledging several people. I’m not sure how we would have been able to manage this year’s activities without the guidance and assistance of Art Flagg. And, the SAHBA staff has been nothing short of a pleasure to work with. We would not have achieved all of our goals had it not been for their assistance and cooperation. I could go on and on about all of the people who assisted me this past year; to all of you – “Thank You” so much.
